Wine About It: How Alcohol Affects the Musculoskeletal System

Whether you are an athlete celebrating a post-game victory or just gearing-up for the holidays, it seems that alcohol creeps into our daily lives. While for some of us the short stint of drinking has little impacts, alcohol can prove to be a major hurdle for those undergoing rehabilitation. Alcohol abuse and addiction historically has been seen as a “medical” issue; however, data now show that rehabilitation professionals must start being aware of alcohol’s effects for optimal musculoskeletal outcomes.

We will examine the literature on how alcohol affects: inflammation, muscle and tendon healing, bone health, sports performance, and recovery. Practical applications for rehabilitation professionals will be discussed and resources for further facilitation will be provided. Those working in outpatient, sports, athletic training, and post-surgical settings will find the content important and relevant.
